One heart, two homes

Meet Khaled Youssef – a proud father, loving husband and dedicated Shoppers Drug Mart® Associate-Owner in the town of Perth, Ontario. Khaled grew up in Egypt and from a young age, knew he wanted to help people with their health. He was inspired by his father who was also a pharmacist. After finishing school and working in Egypt for many years, Khaled moved to Canada, hoping to continue the work he loved in a new country – but the journey was much harder than he ever imagined.

Christina’s passion for advancing patient care

Christina Ma, Director, Pharmacy Services - Pharmacist-Led Chronic Disease Management Programs, joined Shoppers Drug Mart almost four years ago. Having spent nearly five years working as a community pharmacist, supporting patients with mental health issues, those living with HIV, and older adults with unique health needs, she came to Shoppers for the opportunity to help make it easier for patients to access the care they need, when and where it’s most convenient for them.

Holden’s got game

For the past two years, Holden Cattoni has worked as Senior Manager, Strategy and Planning, supporting the President of Shoppers Drug Mart® and collaborating with strategy leads across the business. During the week, he is immersed in the strategic heart of Shoppers Drug Mart, and on weekends he transforms into a professional lacrosse player, competing across North America in the National Lacrosse League, skillfully juggling two demanding worlds.

For the fourth year in a row, Shivali Sharma, Associate-Owner of three Shoppers Drug Mart® stores in Edmonton, Alberta, gathered her team of Beauty Managers and Beauty Specialists to give back to their community in a truly special way. At the end of May they volunteered their time and skills to help young mothers at Braemar School get ready for their graduation.

Kam Kooner and Francesco Stagliano, District Managers for Shoppers Drug Mart, are no strangers to the Shoppers Drug Mart® Run for Women, an annual event held in 18 communities across the country in support of women’s mental health programs. Their involvement with the Run is about more than just participation; it’s about the passion they share for the cause and the camaraderie they’ve built together over the past ten years.

Derrick Pittman’s retail career began in 1993 in the Loblaw bakery department, where he quickly learned the ins and outs of the business. Over the next 30 years, he steadily climbed the ladder—holding positions from Store Manager to District Manager and eventually Vice President of Operations across Loblaws, Zehrs, Provigo, and Market Franchise. In 2023, he served as the Senior Vice President (SVP), Operations for Real Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, and Market Franchise, cementing his reputation as a seasoned operator who understands retail at every level. Derrick’s progression wasn’t just about moving up; it was about building a deep understanding of everyday retail challenges by working side by side with frontline teams.

When allergies hit and sneezes start to fill up lecture halls, students at the University of Ottawa can now Think Pharmacist when looking for relief. The University of Ottawa campus was buzzing with excitement last week as Shoppers Drug Mart officially opened the doors to its latest Pharmacy Care Clinic. This new clinic – the first on a university campus in Canada – marks a significant step forward in enhancing access to healthcare services for the university's vibrant student community.

In honour of this month, we are spotlighting one of the many pharmacists who are making a difference to the health of Canadians. Shoppers Foundation donates $10M to MMIWG2S+ Healing and Empowerment fund 

On February 14, Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health™ (the “Foundation”) announced a $10M donation agreement with the Government of Manitoba to fund critical programs that will directly benefit children and families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S+). The donation will go to the Government of Manitoba’s MMIWG2S+ Healing and Empowerment Fund, an endowment held by The Winnipeg Foundation, which will provide continual and accessible healing programs and support to affected families.

Each fall, stores raise funds for women impacted by domestic violence through the Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health™ Giving Shelter fundraising campaign. Like many of us, I am in a personal season of transition that is sometimes really difficult to navigate. But despite what I’m going through, I show up to work every day and act like nothing’s wrong. The truth is, we ALL have our good and bad days. My relationships with my work family often provide me with comfort, support, and a distraction from my reality. I believe that many of my customers visit me for the same reasons.

For Laurie Reed, skincare and makeup are about more than just looking good. They’re about making ourselves feel good too. As the beauty manager at a Shoppers Drug Mart™ in Thunder Bay, Ont., Laurie tries to make every customer she meets feel good. When one of her customers-turned-friends, a woman who works at the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre, approached her about organizing an event for survivors of residential schools and domestic violence, Laurie immediately said yes.

When Shirley Ibe first saw her products listed on the Shoppers Drug Mart® website, she almost couldn’t believe it was finally happening. “In the lead-up to launch day, I was so focused on getting everything done and making sure I was meeting all the requirements, that when we actually launched, I almost had a hard time believing it was real life!” she says. “It just felt so surreal. But eventually, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is the moment you've been waiting for.’”
